Alfons Van Meirvenne studied at the Academy in Sint-Niklaas from 1947 to 1950. He was trained there by Georges Fonteyne and Robert Van De Velde. A year later he started his studies at the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he became a laureate in 1959. He participates in several national and international exhibitions. These exhibitions are often reasons for winning several prizes, including the Grand Prix of Rome in 1961.

The sculpture in the park of Castle Cortewalle shows a horse defending a foal against a bull. The size of this work suggests a true-to-life sculpture. By interweaving these animals, the sculpture emphasizes the intensive fight between them and also gives the sculpture more dynamic power. In this sculpture, Alfons Van Meirvenne expresses his interest in nature, which gives him inspiration for several sculptures.

This work was restored in 2017 by Bronsatelier Buysse (Meengracht 8 – 9620 Zottegem)
