This large sand extraction pit was excavated during the construction of the first Antwerp forts in 1866. The earth was used for the reinforcements of the nearby Brialmont forts (Fort van Zwijndrecht and Fort Sint-Marie).
Kallo city council complained: such a pool of 4.5 meters deep would cause 'heavy fumes' and bring about diseases! The War Department did not accede to the objection and the sand extraction pit was dug. Afterwards no one seemed to complain: many fish appeared in the 'Baarsenput' or 'Bazeput'.Now, more than 150 years later, this is a paradise for birds and bird lovers.
A surprising location to relax at the bird watching wall.
Enjoy your break time.
