Since 1560, this square housed, in its northern block, the building of the Cabildo of Cuzco and was known as Plaza Cabildo. The extension was used for civil and theatrical festivities, as well as a bullring. In the 18th century, after the rebellion of Túpac Amaru II, this square was the place of torture of his brother Diego Cristóbal Túpac Amaru.
