The Kleine Herk flows with you here and leaves the civilized world for a moment to seek silence...

Here you will find the Bengelbeemd, an initiative of the Regionaal Landschap Haspengouw & Voeren. This is not a birth forest but an alternative to it. The municipality of Alken was planning to create a birth forest but the organization advised against it. You can read the reasons via the link below. Every year in the Bengelbeemd "a picnic is organized, after the hay has been harvested, where each newborn gets a picnic blanket of one square meter". The bench with the sunflowers is in memory of a young and much-loved resident of Alken who passed away much too early in the summer of 2022. RIP, Julie.

In 2012, the municipal council of Alken bought a piece of nature reserve along the Kleine Herk to create a native forest. From the Herk en Mombeek Strategic Project, the municipal council was advised not to plant forests here, but to preserve this historic valley area. It was a patchwork of small-scale hay and grasslands, lined with wood edges and hedges. The necessary works were carried out to restore the landscape, such as the felling of poplars and the restoration and planting of wood edges. In addition, the Bengelbeemd was created, a beautiful alternative to a birth forest, where every newborn baby in the village receives a symbolic square meter of valley area as a gift. This is visualized with an annual picnic in the meadow, after harvesting the hay, where each newborn receives a picnic blanket of one square meter.
