Here you will find a young standard orchard with a hawthorn hedge that was planted by Natuurpunt around the turn of the century on the edge of the Mombeek valley. It is partly a reminder of the many standard orchards that were felled here about fifty years earlier. It is also just a nice piece to walk through, of course provided with the necessary information. For example, something is told about the old fruit varieties that used to occur here (and some of which are on this site) such as the Alkense Streepjesappel. On the information board you can read how the construction of standard orchards in Alken increased sharply in the 19th century, but the orchards disappeared again after a peak in the period 1920-1950 due to the intensification of agriculture and low-standard plantings. Nature walkers are allowed to taste the different fruits, except for the apples that are processed into apple juice. The orchard is accessible from two sides via gates.
