Because Damme was so close to the sea, the water was undrinkable. In order to be able to provide the inhabitants with fresh water, water was brought in from the interior. In 1269, the city received the count's permission to pump water from the pond of the castle of Male, a few kilometers away. The water was transported via a system of lead pipes (pipes) along the Pijpeweg (hence the name). At various places in the city there were water pumps where the inhabitants of Dammen could get their drinkable water.
