Damme was a strategically important point in the sixteenth century. It was located between Bruges and the enemy Sluis, where a settlement with a defensive wall was built during the Twelve Years' Truce (the armistice of the Spanish war). The main wall is built according to the Old Dutch Stelsen and consisted of seven bastions connected with curtains. A second rampart and an outer moat were constructed.
