Here they are 'Two Angry Soldiers with their backs to each other. This work of art on a stone pedestal is by Gerard Brouwer.

    Historical indication:
The States and Spanish refers to the 16th century, when the Netherlands were still part of the Catholic Spanish empire. Through a revolt against the Spaniards, during the Eighty Years' War, they broke away from Spain. Because the Netherlands were governed by the States General, the Dutch troops were called the 'States', and the Spaniards, of course, the 'Spaans'. One of the most important front lines in this war was located in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, “De Staats Spanjer Line”. The fortifications constructed in Hulst at the time (city walls, bulwarks, counterscarps, ravelin and city gates) still dominate the appearance of Hulst. Hulst therefore deserves the name Vestingstad. On your route you will encounter several small Spanish soldiers, called "The Pagadders". In a separate route, especially for children, they tell the history of this period. Together with the existing sculptures, these two groups of sculptures form the heart of the sculpture route.
