The project 'Making Casemate S76 visible again' was concluded on Wednesday 10 May 2023 with a meeting at the casemate at the bottom of the Maas near the church stairs in Kessel.
A plaque was also unveiled with the names of the eight Dutch soldiers and six German soldiers who fell on this spot between Kessel and Kessel-Eik on 10 May 1940. Children from Kessel and Grevenbroich (D) laid flowers.
The casemate was built in 1939 as part of the Maas Line. During the mobilization period, the 17th regiment of Limburg fighters was first stationed here and from October 1939 the 3-III-41 RI under the command of Captain Kiers. The casemate was fired on May 10, 1940 around 11 a.m. and received a direct hit, because a German shell came through the loophole in the casemate and exploded. Two of the three soldiers in the casemate were seriously injured. In the early fifties, they tried to clear the casemate by making it explode.
