The city of Verden, once an important bishopric, was surrounded by a city wall in the Middle Ages. This wall was made of brick and featured city gates and towers.

Bishop Yso (1205-1231) had a brick city wall built around Verden's northern town around 1220/1230, as the administrative headquarters for the episcopal bailiwicks was located here. The bricks came from the then town brickworks. The remaining part of the wall also served as flood protection. The original wall was approximately six meters high.

For centuries, the wall of the northern town formed the boundary against the open countryside. A merchant settlement developed here around the town hall. The city wall had several defensive towers and four gates.

The southern town with the cathedral, the capital of the Diocese of Verden, only received a stone ring wall around 1350.

In 1667, the two halves of the city were united by decree at the behest of the Swedish rulers. The South Gate and parts of the city wall were demolished.

The walls were demolished at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. They had lost their function due to the advent of firearms. Some fragments from the 13th and 14th centuries can still be seen today.
