The Sea War Museum in Thyborøn is impressive and thought-provoking at the same time.

The Battle of the Skagerrak took place off the coast in 1916. Here 25 ships were sunk and about 8,645 Navy soldiers lost their lives.

The Sea War Museum Jutland in Thyborøn is the only museum in Denmark where only international history is told.

The focus is on World War I, out in the North Sea, where the world's largest naval battle, the Battle of Skagerrak, took place off the west coast of Jutland in 1916.

A good 100 kilometers west of Thyborøn, 100,000 men on 250 German and British ships fought for supremacy at sea. The thunder of the cannons was so violent that it could be heard even on land.

The 12-hour battle ended with 25 ships stranded and 8,645 German and British sailors lost their lives.

During World War I, the North Sea was the scene of a devastating blockade and counter-blockade that were crucial to the outcome of the war. Only at the Sea War Museum Jutland in Thyborøn can you experience the whole story.

In Denmark, the museum is on neutral ground, and as soon as you step inside, visitors will encounter the museum's motto: "War is a tragedy and must not be glorified, but the story must be told, and the victims must not be forgotten." We have no enemies. The enemy is war itself.

In connection with the museum, in the middle of the dunes, right next to the sea, there is a memorial to the Battle of Skagerrak, which is considered by many to be the finest example of "land art" in Denmark. The memorial consists of large granite boulders shaped like ship's stems, each representing a sunken ship.

Many German and British guests visit Thyborøn for the sole purpose of laying a wreath at the common memorial. (Source: seawarmuseum.dk/de/Sea-War-Museum--Seekriegsmuseum-Jutland)
