The Pfungstädter Moor is a 97-hectare nature reserve. It was declared part of the "Hessian Altneckarschlingen" bird sanctuary in 2007. Access is open to visitors on the designated paths. The moor was formed around 10,000 years ago when an arm of the Altneckar found a new bed and the old river silted up. In the 19th and early 20th century, peat was mined and used as fuel in many residential and factory buildings.

Due to various influences, the groundwater level dropped constantly, so that the renaturation of the moor was endangered. From 1999 onwards, treated water from the Rhine was added with the aim of re-establishing moor-typical animal and plant species at least in parts of the protected area by means of near-surface moisture penetration and an increase in groundwater levels.

Further considerations as to how the situation in this nature reserve could be improved in the long term led to a plan by the Darmstadt working group of the Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation (HGON) for the partial restoration of a system of peat extraction ditches from the early 1900s. After approval by the higher nature conservation authority at the Darmstadt regional council, a more than 3 km long water-covered ditch system was restored in five construction phases from 2006 to 2016. Nature conservation associations, the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg and the regional council of Darmstadt were involved in the financing.
