Fallen trees can be found along a path lined with Lesser Balsam, as this part of the forest is no longer managed. If you touch the ripe pods of balsam, they "explode". The "deadwood" of the trees forms the basis of life for a wealth of animal and plant species and thus ensures that the biodiversity of the moor is preserved. Deadwood provides a habitat and forms a habitat for insects in particular thus also the food base for the bird population in the bird sanctuary.
