Around 1775, the Prussians began to reforest some areas of the northern Eifel with spruce. Belgium followed suit and planted large areas with spruce. The reforestation began in the Herzogenwald. Unfortunately, moorland areas were also used for the reforestation. However, these first had to be drained via ditches. It was only since around 1980 that some areas have been de-spruced and the drainage ditches closed again.
