Beautiful in every season. Some "moor lakes" (ponds) are so-called palsas. These are very similar to the pingos in their morphology and formation, but significantly smaller than pingos with heights between about 1 and 10 meters and lengths between about 15 and 150 meters.
    For explanation:
The palsen or pingos in the High Fens were formed around 10,000 to 11,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. When the ground froze deep down during the cold winters of the Ice Age, the wet ground expanded and frost mounds developed. Over the years these mounds grew and the soil material that was on top slid down the sides of the mounds and over time formed a ring-shaped wall around Frost Mound. With the end of the ice age, the ice melted, the frost mound sagged and the wall was preserved. The water in the middle is called bog scour or bog eye.

The High Fens is a plateau (694m above sea level) of about 4500 ha between Belgium and Germany, or between Ardennes and Eifel, part of the German-Belgian nature park High Fens - Eifel. It is a high moor area that is unique in Europe and since 1992 the moors and heaths there have been very strictly protected. It was shunned in the past because of its hostility to life. Apart from peat extraction and forestry, there were hardly any possible uses. It has always been a harsh and dangerous region for merchants and travellers. Sudden changes in the weather, especially in winter, meant that the paths were lost in fog and snow. Today there are good hiking trails and boardwalks, but the High Fens is still a very lonely region, tourism is limited to a few areas and even then mainly to weekends. Access restrictions must be observed (Zone A to Zone D). A red flag is raised if an area is closed beyond the general restriction (information on this Tel.: 0032 (0) 87 552313). West of Mützenich, shortly after the Belgian border, the Brackvenn stretches to the left and right of the Monschauer Straße. South of the road are the areas of Im Platten Venn, Hobbe, Königliches Torfmoor and Misten, and north of the road is the Nahtsief area. The area is scenically, historically and geologically very interesting and thanks to many wooden walkways it is easy to walk on. In the High Fens there are several palsen, also called pingos. They were formed at the end of the last ice age, around 10,000 to 11,000 years ago, and consist of a round mound of earth surrounding a water hole, the so-called bog eye.

In the Brack-Fens you walk almost all the time on footbridges. There are still a few of this sight in this bog.
