The church is named, to distinguish it from the other churches dedicated to St. Michael, by its proximity to the Minster belfry, which was added to the gable of the south transept in the first half of the 14th century and itself probably replaced an earlier bell-tower attached to the south transept. A passage in the life of St. John of Beverley written by Folcard, a Flemish monk at Thorney Abbey, refers to the saint using the church, suggesting the possibility that a church has existed at this location since the beginning of the 8th century.
