The column came from the north-east colonnade of the Roman basilica that was built by, and provides a tangible link to, the legendary Legio IX Hispana, whose demise is still hotly debated. I still favour the original theory that they were decimated during Agricola's campaign in Caledonia (Scotland). They were also roundly beaten by Boudicca at Camulodunum (Colchester) in AD61.
