The discovery of the marble quarry here is a by-product of the exploration of iron ore deposits in the area around the Hartenberg in the 18th century. The main phase of the approximately 150-year-old quarry operation was between 1840 and 1848 and was based on economic and political ties between the Counts of Stolberg-Werni-gerode and the Prussian royal family. The quarry was constantly occupied by 10 to 15 miners, and mining took place above and underground. The economic viability of the quarry was significantly limited due to geological impairments of the deposit.
