Very nice little town on the Rhine. The Rheinfels castle ruins are located above the city.
Picturesque half-timbered town in the shadow of a mighty Rheinburg
It was at the beginning of the 6th century when a young priest from southern France came to the Rhine and settled as a hermit in a rock cave. With the permission of the Archbishop of Trier, Goar built a hostel for Rhine boatmen and began to evangelize them. After his death he was canonized and his grave became a place of pilgrimage. Finally, 700 years later, St. Goar was granted city rights. Today the picturesque half-timbered town is part of the Middle Rhine World Heritage Site and lies in the shadow of Rheinfels Castle.
      Definitely worth seeing!

Until the Reformation, the collegiate church was a famous place of pilgrimage to the grave of St. Goar, the missionary and city founder of the place of the same name. Charlemagne already visited this grave. The interior of the church is adorned with late Gothic wall paintings and reticulated vaults, a remarkable pillar pulpit and three excellent grave monuments. The three-aisled, Romanesque crypt from the 11th / 12th centuries. Century is considered the most beautiful between Cologne and Speyer.
