The rock Loreley is located in the Rhine-Lahn district in the territory of the Verbandsgemeinde Loreley. The Loreley Plateau is part of the borough of Bornich, while the steep slopes and cliffs towering around the Rhine belong to the urban area of Sankt Goarshausen. The Loreley is located in the center of the natural area St. Goarer Tal as part of the natural spatial main unit Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The 300 meter wide river bed of the Middle Rhine above the Kammereck is narrowed by the rock barriers just above the Loreley, on the Betteck, to 145 meters. In the Loreley itself, the Rhine is 160 meters wide and was up to 25 meters deep. These are the narrowest and deepest parts of the Rhine on its navigable section. On the other hand, the two riverbanks give way downstream, at the Loreleyhafen, for a short distance, trough-like again up to 400 meters apart. At Sankt Goar and Sankt Goarshausen the current is usually 250 meters wide. The Rhine winds in tight curves through the rock massif. Because of these very tight bends and strong currents, the Rhine navigation from the Bankeck in Sankt Goar to Oberwesel is regulated by light signal points.

The Loreley (Lorelei) is an approx. 132 meter high slate rock in the World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley near St. Goarshausen. The view from the vantage point of the cities of St. Goarshausen with Katz Castle and the sister city of St. Goar with Rheinfels Castle is deeply impressive for all tourists. At the Loreley (Lorelei) the Rhine is up to 25m deep and only 113m wide. Because this place is so narrow and deep, it is still one of the most dangerous in the world heritage.loreleyinfo.de
