This is the direct route to the castle from the lower town. The path leads up and down over steps. About halfway there is an oasis of calm with a bench. At the top you come out at the mill (= public toilets). Once around and further up, hey presto you are in front of the castle gate.

Meersburg is a beautiful village on the northern shore of Lake Constance, the village is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It is an ancient village whose history goes all the way back to the Merovingians, who dominated this part of Europe in the early Middle Ages.Meerburg is even home to the oldest inhabited castle in Germany; the Meersburg castle. This castle dates from the seventh century and was built by order of the Merovian king Dagobert the First. Nothing has been preserved of the original castle and the sources that confirm this leave much to be desired. However, it is generally assumed that Meerburg Castle was built in the seventh century. Now a large part of the castle has been converted into a museum. During a visit to this castle you will receive a tour of more than thirty furnished rooms, which will give you a good idea of life in a medieval castle. Highlights of a visit to Meerburg Castle include the old castle kitchen, the fountain room, the knight's hall, the old dungeon and the Dürnitz.
