Liverpool's Chinatown is the oldest Chinese community in Europe. The first major wave of immigration occurred in the late 1850s. To provide accommodation for sailors during shore leave, boarding houses were set up, run by compatriots who spoke their own language. Many sailors chose to stay in Liverpool.
