The mausoleum is based on designs by Ernst Friedrich Zwirner (1802-1861), who had been a cathedral builder in Cologne since 1833 and is considered one of the key initiators of the completion of Cologne Cathedral. He also came up with the plans in 1840 for the reconstruction of the Rolandsbogen, which collapsed on December 28, 1839 - a remaining castle window of the ruins of Rolandseck Castle, which, like the Heisterbach choir ruins, is one of the icons of Rhine romanticism of the 19th century.

The family crypt of the Counts of Lippe-Biesterfeld, created in 1840 in the form of a neo-Gothic forest chapel, was embedded in the mountain slope in the direction of the ponds created with the landscape garden expansion.
