In addition to the VVV Deventer (Tourism and City Marketing Office of the City of Deventer), the Penninckshuis is also a special church building. The facade with the statues (Penninckshuis) is one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance in Deventer and in the Netherlands. Around 1588, the merchant Herman Penninck commissioned the construction of this magnificent facade, which should reflect his wealth and his education. The six statues above the front door represent the six virtues (faith, hope, love, prudence, strength and temperance). Later the building was used as a Catholic hidden church. At the end of the 19th century the building had become dilapidated. The Baptist Church had the façade restored and a new church built behind it. The building is currently still used as a Mennonite Remonstrant Church.
The statue of Albert Schweitzer just in front of the Penninckshuis dates from 1975 and was made by Pieter de Monchy. It is here because the Penninckshuis housed the international Albert Schweizer Center for several years, which is now in Maarssen.

At the tourist office you can book a 1.5-hour city walk with a city guide for €6 per person. In our case it was 2.5 hours due to the enthusiasm of the city guide.
Definitely worth it. You hear and see things that you would otherwise quickly pass by.

Inside you will find the tourist office and a former clandestine church.
