The castle “De Nijenbeke”, a defensive fortress on the IJssel, is mentioned in writings as early as 1296. At the time it was inhabited by knight Theodericus, also called Dirk, Lord of Nijenbeek. It is plausible that De Nijenbeek has existed for some time, but nothing can be established with certainty. In 1314 the first IJsseldijk was constructed along De Nijenbeek.

Nijenbeek Castle is located on an old bed of the IJssel near Voorst. Due to the meandering of the river, it is now a few hundred meters from the IJssel. The remainder is a square keep. The castle was probably founded in the early 13th century. See further: denijenbeek.nl
