The oldest church in the region is located in Bergkirchen. According to a legend, the Saxon prince Widukind searched for the right faith. At his prayer, his horse pawed with its hoof, and a spring gushed from that spot.
A wooden church was then built there - probably in 776. The first wooden church in Bergkirchen is said to be Pope Leo III. It was dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra in the presence of Charlemagne in 799.
The first stone church was probably built around 1200. The lowest layer of stone was rediscovered during renovation work in 1967. The southern wall of this Romanesque building has been preserved in its entire length and at its full height. The current building dates from 1752.

A special feature of the church are the stained glass windows designed by the artist Franz Xaver Braunmüller (1905-1993) in colors of medieval symbolism with biblical themes.

The church of St. Nikolaus is not only the origin of the town of Bergkirchen. Charlemagne is said to have founded the first church here, on a pass road over the Wiehengebirge, in place of a Saxon sanctuary, and Pope Leo dedicated it to St. Nicholas 1200 years ago. The current church building dates from 1756.

The Nikolauskirche forms the start and end point of the "Nikolausweg" pilgrimage route, which connects two Nikolaus churches in this region. Unfortunately, the church cannot be visited, but exploring the historic cemetery and the Wittekind spring below is worth a visit.
