Pièrre Jules Mène was one of the most important sculptors of the 19th century in Paris, then the cultural capital of Europe.Mène was born on March 25, 1810 in Paris and received his first lessons in metal modeling from his father, who was a metalworker. He then made porcelain designs and small earthenware figurines. Later he studied with René Compaire and became proficient in the anatomy of the human and animal body. In the zoo of Paris he made studies of animals and from 1838 he regularly held exhibitions in the so-called Salon. These exhibitions made him widely known. His animal sculptures are especially loved for their anatomical precision.Mène was one of the first artists to understand the importance of good marketing. Together with his son-in-law Auguste Nicolas Cain, who was also an animal sculptor, he founded a company that published a catalogue. Interested parties could place their orders on the basis of the catalogue. This customer-friendly approach ensured that the works / reproductions were quickly spread across Europe, especially in France and England.Piere Jules Mène lived in Paris all his life. He died on May 21, 1879. Mène's sculpture group "European horses" was unveiled by alderman J. Boogaard of the municipality of Sluis-Aardenburg on September 8, 2001.

In September 2007, the statue was placed on a pedestal with the poem '850 years of 'Poetry in the Low Countries' on it.
