Aardenburg is a surprisingly nice town!

The Kaaipoort, located on the Kai, is the only remaining city gate of Aardenburg. Originally there were four, but the other three have been demolished. The basic form of the Kaaipoort (also known as Westpoort and Waterpoort) dates from 1299, but the current appearance dates from 1650.

The coats of arms of Aardenburg and the Republic can be seen on either side of the main passage. The coat of arms of Aardenburg refers to the medieval name and prosperity of Aardenburg: a red castle (Rodenburg) on a field of gold. The coats of arms were affixed to the harbor gate as a reminder of the conquest of Aardenburg by Prince Maurits in 1604. After the valiant defense against the French, two red lions were allowed to be added to their coat of arms in 1672. The two lions have been retained in the coat of arms of the current municipality of Sluis.

Above the passage is a stone lion with the coat of arms of Aardenburg again. There is also a weather vane with tulips. In the mid-17th century, the tulip was a symbol of wind trade and vanity.

The Kaaipoort was originally located on the harbour, but was filled in in 1813. The gates for pedestrians were added in 1925. The Westpoort is low, as it was originally built into the rampart and did not rise above it.
