The Wolfsgrube at Ittelshofen is the best preserved in Franconia. It was carved in sandstone in 1637 and has a diameter of about 3m. In the ground pegs were anchored with laces upwards. In the middle a tree trunk protruding over the pit was attached to which a sheep or another animal was fastened, in order to lure the wolves. The pit was then covered with branches. The wolf plague was particularly large in the so-called small ice age around 1600.
