The Waag in Gouda (also called the cheese weigh house) is located on the Markt, opposite the back of the town hall. The Waag was built to a design by Pieter Post in 1668, after Gouda had been able to lease the right to the Waag for fifteen years from the Hollandse Rekenkamer in 1667. This lease agreement with the Rekenkamer was then tacitly extended. Attempts to purchase the weighing rights failed. It was not until 1806 that the annual payments to the state were terminated.[1] In May 1670, the balance sheets were hung in the new building. The designer of the building, Pieter Post, had died a year before the building was completed.
