Impeller lock outside

The Waaiersluis is a lock complex with a lock and a sluice in the Hollandsche IJssel, between the river and the canalised part. The complex is located in the Dutch municipality of Gouda. The lock is special because it was the first time that a impeller lock was used in a waterway. The Waaiersluis owes its name to the impeller doors. The lock also has four pairs of pointed doors, namely a pair of ebb doors and a pair of flood doors in both lock heads. The impeller doors are located in the intermediate head. This construction makes it possible to fire both during high and low tide.
