A fragmented quartz vein of the Czech Quartz Hill rises from a rocky ridge above the surrounding surface. Frost weathering has fractured the quartz vein into many bizarre rock formations. In the area surrounding the Frost Huts, boulders, rock towers, and crevices complement the slopes. Stone and gravel were mined here in small quarries until 1946.

The “Goethe Rock”, which is designated as a natural monument, is made up of several rock groups on a mighty “quartz reef” belonging to the Bohemian Pile. The outcrop is about 400 m long and up to 15 m high. Because of its strength, quartz was quarried in several quarries, the largest being operated until the 1960s.

At the south end of the quartz train, a marked junction leads from the blue marked hiking trail to the inconspicuous Goethe stone. There is a commemorative plaque on this boulder, which the police councilor, amateur scientist and mineral collector Joseph Sebastian Grüner from Eger (1780–1864) affix to the visit of the Grand Duchess of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach, Marija Pawlowna Romanowa (1786–1859) left.
