The first stones of the city wall of Heusden, with gates and towers, were laid in the middle of the 14th century. That became the beginning of the current fortress. In 1572, a city fire largely reduced Heusden to ashes and it was taken over by the water beggars. Once back in State hands, it was decided in 1579 to fortify the city according to the Old Dutch Fortification System. The plan comes from fortress builder Adriaen Anthonisz van Alcmaer and was carried out by Jacob Kemp, sheriff of Gorinchem. During the Twelve Years' Truce, the fortified city of Heusden was further strengthened and expanded. The purpose of the ramparts in Heusden: the protection of the castle and the harbor of Heusden. That worked because this fortified city was long considered "TLANTS STERCKTE", so impregnable.
