The fortified city of Heusden originally had four city gates, one in each direction. Two of the four gates can still be seen in the town today: the Veerpoort (also known as the Waterpoort) and the Wijkse Poort. The city gates give a true picture of what life used to be like. At the end of the twentieth century, both gates were renovated. Old images, such as a seventeenth-century city map, clearly showed what the city gates used to look like. The remaining foundations of the gates have been restored based on the images.
