The Speyer Cathedral is the name given to the Imperial and Mariendom cathedral in Speyer (officially: Cathedral Church of St. Mary and St. Stephen). It is one of the three Romanesque imperial cathedrals in Germany. After the partial destruction of the Cluny Abbey during Napoleon's rule, the cathedral is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1981.

The Salian king and later emperor Conrad II probably had construction started in 1025 with the aim of building the largest church in the West (Wikipedia).

Speyer Cathedral is an impressive and beautiful example of Romanesque architecture and the largest surviving Romanesque church building in the world. It was consecrated in 1061.

Interestingly, Speyer Cathedral stands on a subsoil that has sunk slightly over the centuries. As a result, the cathedral now sits slightly lower than originally planned. Despite this slight subsidence, the cathedral has retained its impressive structure and stability and remains an important architectural and historical landmark.
