The Altpörtel was the western city gate in the city wall of Speyer. As if by a miracle, the Altpörtel escaped the devastation of the War of the Palatinate Succession. Today you can climb up to the top floor of the city gate and enjoy the view of Speyer and the cathedral from above.

The Altpörtel was the western city gate Speyer and part of the medieval fortification, which included 68 wall and gate towers. It forms opposite the cathedral the conclusion of the Maximilianstrasse.
The construction began in 1230 and three hundred years later the top floor of the tower was added, with the late Gothic tracery parapet and arcade arches of the gallery. The steep roof with the lantern dates back to 1708. At 55 meters, it is one of the highest and most important city gates in Germany. Richly structured, the side facing the city presents itself, the loopholes of the west side indicate the defensive function of the tower.
On the northern side of the Old Gate Passage is an iron bracket attached. It represents the Speyerer normal measure, the 28 cm high, so-called Speyerer Normalschuh, which was the measure of all things for every trader in Speyer. Due to fortunate circumstances, the tower survived the city destruction in 1689 and remained as one of the few remains of the medieval city fortifications. The name Altpörtel gives up puzzles, the derivation of the Latin alta porta = high gate can be found nowhere.
On the east and west sides of the Altpörtels two dials of the tower clock are attached. The hands on the large dials indicate the hour, the hands on the small dials the quarter-hour. Earlier, the hour was the most important time indication. Therefore, the dials indicating the full hours are considerably larger than the dials indicating "only" the quarter hours. In addition, the hour dial on the outside is larger, so that travelers could recognize the time even from a distance.
Take the trouble and climb the tower (magnificent view of the city!). Source: speyer.de/sv_speyer/en/Tourismus/Vision/Altp%C3B6rtel

Beautiful city gate. Limits the pedestrian area.
