The Schnoor makes it possible to experience Hanseatic tradition and history. Every year thousands of visitors come to Bremen's oldest district. The Schnoor owes its name to the small, picturesque houses that line up like pearls on a string, because "Snoor" is the Low German word for "string".

In earlier times, the quarter was inhabited mainly by fishermen and sailors, as immediately next to the Balge, a tributary of the Weser, ran.

The Schnoor is dominated by a cozy, rustic atmosphere. From its narrow streets and corners, visitors and residents feel equally attracted. If you stroll past the numerous restaurants, cafés and pubs, you will recognize the still existing historic building fabric, which has been extensively and lovingly restored over the past decades.

Bremen's oldest district has numerous cultural institutions such as theaters, variety shows, galleries and museums. In addition, there are many craft shops and antique shops with an exceptional range.

The Schnoor was mentioned in writing for the first time in the 13th century in connection with the Franciscan monastery. In the 14th century the corresponding Propsteikirche St. Johann was added. This is still one of the important buildings of the Schnoor and is affectionately called "The Little Vatican in the Schnoor".

The Schnoor is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Bremen. This is where Bremen's history, lively everyday life and a wide range of tourist attractions combine to create a place with a very special atmosphere. (Source: bremen-schnoor.de)

The Schnoor - also called the Schnoorviertel (from Low German Schnoor, Snoor = string) - is a medieval Gängeviertel in the old town of Bremen and also the name of the street Schnoor in this district.
The lodging owes its name to the old shipcraft. The corridors between the houses were often associated with occupations or objects: So there was an area in which ropes and ropes were made (Schnoor = string), and an adjacent area where wire and anchor chains were made (Low German Wiere = wire ), from where the street Lange Wieren got its name.

The explanations by Aro and Vlady say everything worth knowing about the Schnoorviertel.
My tip: Don't just go through it. Bring plenty of time. Browse through the small, quaint shops. Eat or drink something with plenty of time in one of the cozy cafes or bars. Just enjoy!
