“STATION 11 GIANT HORSEAIL - LIVING FOSSIL
It seems primeval, the giant horsetail. And nowhere else in Bochum are there such extensive stocks of the largest native species of horsetail. Its botanical species name "Equisetum telmateia" is derived from the Greek word telematiaios "living in the swamp". An apt description, as it prefers wet locations with a springy flow, like here in this nature reserve. The giant horsetail also needs some lime: The Emscher marl, a clayey and calcareous sedimentary rock, provides it here. Individual plants can grow up to 2 m high. Its primeval relatives from the Carboniferous (360 - 300 million years ago) reached heights of up to 30 m and formed entire swamp forests. After these had died out, the hard coal of the Ruhr area developed from their remains."
