The Mary Fountain is traditionally called the "Lion Fountain" by many Liège residents.

The fountain, originally built in marble (1695-1696) on the Place de la Cathédrale, was rebuilt in small granite in 1854 in Vinâve d'Ile by the architect Rémont. The monument was listed as a historical monument by royal decree in 1936.

The Virgin's Fountain (also called the Lion's Fountain) stands north of the Place de la Cathédrale in the centre of Liège. In the centre, a column rises to the sky and supports a statue of the Virgin and Child. At the foot of each side lies a large rectangular basin into which the head of a cherub spits its water. At each of these basins, a reclining lion directs its jet of water at a shell-shaped basin.

The front of the column is decorated with a bas-relief depicting the city of Liège, crowned by a cherub and flanked by the Liège Steps. The standing Virgin, of life size, carries the baby Jesus in one arm and is the work of Jean Delcour. The fountain has stood in the middle of the Perron du Vînave d’île since 1854.

This fountain is much more often called the fontaine aux lions and was not always in this place. It was first made of marble, erected at the end of the 17th century on what is now the place de la Cathédrale, and then placed on Vierge à l’Enfant, a statue from 1696 by Jean Del Cour. In 1854, the fountain was rebuilt in its current location by the Liège architect Julien-Étienne Rémont, who preferred fine granite to marble.
