Eugène Simonis endowed the statue with various attributes to recall elements from the life and work of André Dumont.

The bronze statue depicting the geologist looks at the ground, to which the index finger of his right hand also points. These two details are present to remember Dumont's research area.

In his left hand he holds a parchment with the first geological map of Belgium, which he made in 1836.

At his feet lie tools and a miner's lamp, a reminder of his discovery of coal in Flanders, which contributed to the country's economic development.

On the base of the statue there are also shells and a fossil, an area on which Dumont particularly worked in his writing: Tertiary Fossils in Belgium.

Dumont can be seen wearing a professor's dress from the University of Liège. Around his neck he also wears the medal of the Order of Leopold, whose commander was André-Herbert Dumont.

André Dumont was a professor of mineralogy and geology at the University of Liège. As its rector, he is known for having drawn up the first geological map of Belgium. The statue was inaugurated by King Leopold II on July 17, 1866.
