The storm surge of November 13, 1872 is regarded as the most devastating Baltic Sea flood in history, statistically it is rated as a millennium event. The cause was storms from the west and southwest days earlier, which pushed large amounts of water towards Finland and the Baltic States. While there was high tide there, the Danish and German coasts experienced extreme low tide, while at the same time North Sea water flowed over the Kattegat for days. Then the wind turned, followed by a two-day hurricane that drove the water masses back to the southwest. An outflow of the water in the direction of the North Sea was impeded by the strong north-easterly wind. The dammed water masses led to unimaginable flooding on the coasts of the southern Baltic Sea. The marker on the old customs house (now a museum) in Assen is just one of hundreds along the affected coastal area. The water was around 3.5 meters above normal here.
