Willemoesgården is one of Assens' oldest townhouses.

Today the facade of Willemoesgården appears redwashed, as studies during a facade restoration in 1957-58 showed that the courtyard was that color around 1600.

Among other things, the building is the birthplace of the Danish seafarer Peter Willemoes (1783-1808). Today there is a commemorative plaque for Peter Willemoes on the facade.

The family left Assens in 1795 and the farm passed into the hands of merchants. The grocery store continued until the municipality of Assens bought the property in 1914. Thereafter, Willemoesgården was used as a rental property for private residences until 1955, when the museum took over the running of the building.
