The small, somewhat hidden chapel commemorates Saint Margaret Clitherow, whose home was here in the Shambles. She hid Catholic priests in England during the Reformation and was cruelly executed for it on March 25, 1586 in York. She was martyred by Pope Paul VI in 1970. canonized.

One of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, Margaret Clitherow was executed at the west end of the modern-day Ouse Bridge. Her house may actually have been either this one with the plaque, or the one opposite, as the Shambles was renumbered in the 18th century.
