A house was built on this site c.127O as a Residence for the Abbot of St. Mary's Abbey but was substantially rebuilt in the late I5th century. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 it became, until 1641 the Headquarters of the Council of the North and the Residence of its Presidents who added to the buildings. Henry VIIl. Charles I and James I stayed here. Since 1963 it has been occupied by the University of York.

The first house on this site was almost certainly built c. 1270 for Simon de Warwick, Abbot of St. Mary's. The house as it now exists is mostly a rebuilding of the late 15th century. The work, usually assigned to Abbot William Sever, was begun by his predecessor Abbot Thomas Boothe to whom a Crown licence was given on 30 September 1483. The University of York are due to vacate the premises in Sep 2025, after some 60 years, when it will be handed back over to York City Council. This is due to an estimated £15-20m of maintenance required on the building in addition to the routine annual running costs of £500k, and the Manor's net usable space is only 36%.
