The floodplains (the area between the river and the dike) have already become or are becoming real nature reserves here and there (also on the Belgian side).

Here, near Obbicht, lies the nature reserve Nattenhoven, a roaming area with large grazers, managed by Natuurmonumenten. A few years ago, this area was still a construction site of the Grensmaas Project: to give the river more space, the banks were lowered and new nature was created. Also near Grevenbicht are Elba, where you can already roam today, and Koeweide-Trierveld, which is still being completed by the Grensmaas Consortium.
