The oldest mention is Cutinchoven (1213). The village originated at the source of the Rullingenbeek, which flows from the centre in a north-westerly direction.

Kuttekoven is mentioned in the 13th century as the residence of the knights of Kuttekoven, vassals of the Count of Loon. In administrative terms, it was a Loon municipality with an annually elected mayor.

There were several laathofs on the territory of the municipality. The laathof Sint-Servaas belonged to the chapter of Sint-Servaas of Maastricht. The laathof of Cuttecoven was sold in 1290 to the abbey of Herkenrode, since then called Hof van Herckenrode. It was a very large farm (Ferraris map, 1771-77), which was run by the Pauli-Stravius family in the 16th and 17th centuries. The abbey of Herkenrode owned more than half of the territory of Kuttekoven (approximately 124 hectares). The Hof van Herckenrode was plundered and set on fire in 1636 by the troops of Jan van Weert. It was confiscated and sold in 1797 and subsequently demolished. In the 1930s, a number of walls and a gate were still standing; certain elements were reused in the farm Kleestraat number 18; the Hof van Herckenrode has now completely disappeared; foundations are still present, and the driveway is still visible. Finally, the laathof van Guffen was also located on the territory. The Ferraris map also mentions a tax farm, the Cense den Klein, from which the later farm and castle de Klee originated; it is not clear whether this farm is the same as one of the laathoven mentioned above.

In legal terms, Kuttekoven fell under the Borgloon outer court, Graethem, and appeals were lodged with the Supreme Court of Vliermaal.

The Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk was originally a branch of the Borgloon church with patronage rights in the hands of the Counts of Loon. Patronage rights and the largest part of the tithes came into the hands of the Herkerode Abbey in the 13th century. The Sint-Jan-de-Doperkerk had the right to baptism.

Kuttekoven was always an agricultural municipality, without industry. The settlement pattern is that of a cluster village located in the southern part of the territory, with the linear development, typical of the Vochtig-Haspengouw villages. The Kuttekovenstraat is the most important street in the village, on which the church and the rectory are located.
