The porpoise well is a unique piece of handicraft that symbolizes Middelfart's history with porpoise catching.

The porpoise well stands in the middle of Fisketorvet in Middelfart's old town. It saw the light of day on 25 October 1957, when the work was unveiled. The well was made by Hans Olsen (1902 - 1983), who is a self-taught sculptor. Hans Olsen has previously made cast copper motifs in e.g. jars. The porpoise well thus exudes copper-cast motifs of the porpoise hunters.

For many years, porpoise fishing was the old market town's livelihood. The porpoise hunters lived by selling the crane from the animal, which was used for lamp oil. The porpoise hunters mostly lived in the streets around the porpoise well; Knorregade, Smedegade and Brogade. It was central to the city and in relation to the harbour, where many of them made their living as fishermen or other sailors.

The fish square where the porpoise well is located is a central point in the history of Middelfart. The intersection/square is located where the main road of the time ran through the city before the Old Lillebæltsbro was built and the Brovejen established, which is today's connection to the main road towards Odense. At the Fisketorvet is also Middelfart Church and Henner Friisers Hus, where you can view an exhibition about Middelfart and porpoise catching.
