The St. Nicolai Church is a three-aisled basilica whose construction began in 1407. The St. Nicolai Church is the youngest and smallest of the three Gothic churches. Located in the water district, it was once the boatmen's place of worship, as this district was mainly home to river boatmen and craftsmen who made a living from merchant shipping. The “Turmführerguilde Lüneburg” offers a tour of the church tower by telephone arrangement.

The St. Nicolai Church in Lüneburg is a three-aisled basilica whose construction began in 1407. The central nave is twice as high as the side aisles and higher than the total length of the nave. The central nave is spanned by an eight-pointed star vault, which is unique in Northern Germany. Due to numerous restorations, the church is largely influenced by the 19th century. The church tower, which was completed in 1587, for example, had to be demolished in 1831 because it was in disrepair. The 98 m high tower of the Nicolai Church based on a neo-Gothic design was only completed in 1895. The interior of the church has retained its beautiful medieval character and contains important treasures of Gothic painting and carving.

St. Nicholas Church is over 600 years old. A masterpiece of brick Gothic architecture, the church rises above the alleys of the waterfront district, not far from the Stintmarkt square and the former harbor. The church takes its name from Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors and boatmen.
