Below the Watzmann east face is the deepest permanent ice field in the German Alps: The Ice Chapel! Although the summer snow line is almost 2,000 meters higher, this field of snow ice exists all year round. The reason for this is the enormous masses of snow that come off the Watzmann east face in winter and spring, especially in the form of huge avalanches, and thus nourish the snowfield. However, the quantities are not sufficient to create a flowing glacier. There is also a spacious cavity inside the ice field: the so-called ice chapel. Its entrance resembles a glacier gate, the interior is formed by various shafts and passages, which in summer are over 30 m wide and 15 m high. There are characteristic grooves on the walls caused by melting processes. If the entrances are blocked again by snow in winter, the cave passages shrink again. The snowfield and cave constantly change their shape
