The east face of the Watzmann extends over a height of 1,800 meters from Königssee to the summit of the Watzmann Südspitze. This makes it the longest continuous rock face in the Eastern Alps; it used to be considered the longest completely climbed rock face in the entire Alps. Since the entrance to the east wall begins behind the pilgrimage church of Saint Bartholomä on Königssee, it is sometimes also called the Bartholomä wall. At the foot of the east wall there is another special feature: the ice chapel, the deepest permanent ice field in the Alps!
